Over the past 17 years, thousands of us have grown to love this crazy little game with plastic super heroes, flying across a paper map and teaming up in ways that we never thought were possible. We’ve been to tournaments, local events, and even the grandest stage in the land, but over time the game has started to lose its grasp on the community. How do we as a player base work to overcome such hurdles?

Rebuilding the game, we know and love, is a grossly undervalued part of what makes this experience so special. This is because it takes special people to go out of their way to push boundaries, take risks, and bring people together to help restore Heroclix to its former glory. Welcome one and all, to the Heroclix Community Spotlight.

As we swing back into our community spotlights, the focus has adjusted slightly. Unique and special stories seem to dwindle out as fast as they spring up. While I am still looking for anything fun and exciting to write about, I will take this lull in news to start shedding more light on venues around the country that are passionate about the game and have taken strides to help support, grow, and improve our local, competitive, and national events through hard work, generosity, and patience.

Today the spotlight is pointed on Chris Gordon and The Comic Dimension in Greensboro NC. Chris is the owner of the venue and has proven to demonstrate a real passion for everything involving Heroclix. Whether its weekly local events, WKOs, ROC events, or more, the Comic Dimension is always at the ready to open its doors to old and new players alike. I had a conversation with Chris to find out the odds and ins to his rhythm and what sets them apart from other venues in the region.

The Comic Dimension started as a vision, that one day there would be a venue that defeats the standard stereotypes, I personally have found, that plague many brick and mortar stores across the country. As an avid competitive player, I have visited many venues in many different states, and they all (barring a few special exceptions) have common character traits that can sometimes be perceived as negative. Today, we are going to take a deep dive into how Comic Dimension breaks the wheel (some of you will get it) and sets themselves apart from the rest of the pile.

I don’t know about you, but all too often, I visit venues that have less than satisfactory sanitation, a staff that seems disinterested in helping their patrons, bathrooms that look like they just went through a war zone, and just a feeling of overall neglect. It is in rare form to find a venue that takes the time to ensure the environment in which they spend their time and welcome their customers is in tip top shape. Be sure to check out some photos below about what you might expect inside!

Heroclix events are a high priority according to Chris. He has been playing since the near beginning and has enjoyed the game immensely, a feeling so many of us share. He is the current judge at the venue, and has dedicated himself to ensuring the atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive while also being open to a competitive nature that rewards excellent play. According to Chris, they have weekly OP kit events every Saturday at 5PM where players can compete (typically in a golden age format to ensure everyone can use what they own) to earn the new monthly OP kit figures that release every month (or whenever Wizkids gets around to it.) Top 3 at each of these events are rewarded with a figure!

When standard weekly events aren’t enough, you can also find special events such as Win a maps, Qualifiers, State Tournaments, and Wizkids Opens that will be hosted on a fairly regular basis. As we all know, with the cost reduction of WAM and Qualifier events, it has been increasingly simplistic to run these events regularly and Chris has dedicated time to make sure Comic Dimension is doing its part. At least once a month, you will find a competitive style event where players can test their skills in the 300 modern format to battle it out and win some awesome loot! Be sure to check out their event schedule on the WIN in the link below to stay up to date!

While competitive is amazing, what about the new players, filthy casuals, and people who just want to hang out and have fun? Well it wouldn’t be much of a venue if these people weren’t also shown the same dedication! New players are always taught how to play to the best of their abilities, and players should never have to worry about getting their hands on figures to start out with when they arrive for the first time. Chris stated he is very proud of his local community and the work they put in to ensure everyone feels welcomed and included. Know that if you are wanting to play Heroclix, you will always have a place at the Comic Dimension!

Stores are the backbone of how we continue to share the love of Heroclix with each other, without places to play regularly, we would not be able to evolve, improve, and enjoy each others company! If you are in the Greensboro area, be sure to check out The Comic Dimension and say hi!
