Hello and welcome Heroclix Players to another exciting announcement! Today we are going to be revealing the next inductee into the Heroclix Hall of Fame! It has been a bit since the last round of inductees and this time we will be changing up the process moving forward to make the organization a little more fluent.
For those unaware, here is how the hall of fame works. Year one, members of the ROC team chose 5 members of the community whom they thought to exemplify Heroclix excellence. These players have risen above the competition, won major events, and have been staples of the community for decades. The ROC felt it was very important to not just focus on world champions, but also Judges, Podcasters, Team leaders, and anyone else who has proven their commitment to the game.
Here are the original members of the ROC Heroclix Hall of Fame:
Patrick Yapjoco
Scott Cramton
Daniel Joynes
Edward Shelton
George Massu
From here on out, new members of the hall of fame will be chosen by its current members. An internal panel will determine a list of names they feel should be considered, and then the entire group will vote to choose who will make it in. This year, only two people were chosen to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s take a moment to welcome the newest member of the Heroclix Hall of Fame: Ed Arnold-Berkovitz! (in order to save myself from any more typos than necessary, I will be calling him Ed AB going forward.)
A proud member of Four Points Gaming Club, Ed AB has been playing Heroclix since Hypertime in 2002. As a major comic fan, Heroclix was a big draw to him. Ed AB and his cousin Scott began with home brew games initially but it wasn’t too long before he started frequenting local stores for events. Currently he is a regular at Highlander Games in Boonton NJ and New World Manga in Livingston, averaging about 4 times per month between the two stores before Covid Hit.
As a comic fan, he has always been drawn to team up oriented stories and has really been drawn to Thanos. I asked if this had any impact on his team building process, but he claimed it didn’t. Like many of us Ed focuses on playing what he feels is the best option at the time of a competition.
Ed’s competitive Heroclix career started in 2006 where he won a sealed event which gave him a buy in to Wizard World East in Philly. There he finished 5th place at his major tournament appearance where he lost to his future teammate Matt Esbrook. Fast forward a few years and he found himself winning Wizard World East in 2008. Over the years he has had several more top 8 appearances at worlds and other major events. In 2016 he won the ROC world championship and in 2017 won the ROC team world championship.
Ed stated his inspiration has come from his partnership with the Four Points Gaming Club and of course his son Isaac. He has been a member of Four Points since 2010 where they would just share a room together and theory craft for tournaments. Now, they do not play any teams unless it is approved by Isaac first.
When I asked Ed about his claim to fame, he naturally responded with “I’m Isaac’s Dad!” but then gave a story about his first win in 2008 where he won with the Structural integrity field. He said at the time, most players did not understand just how powerful that object was, and he felt he played a major part in convincing Wizkids to make a change in their game design process.
Ed’s proudest moments in Heroclix have included watching Isaac win multiple major events, his worlds win in 2008 and also how fine tuned he had his build in 2016 when he won the ROC world championship.
After speaking with Ed, it is very clear just how much time, energy, and dedication he has poured into this game over the years. Join me in welcoming Ed AB into the Heroclix Hall of Fame!
